Friend, you were made to discern the voice of the shepherd!

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Immediately after Yeshua tells us to enter through the narrow gate, He cautions us: be on our guard against false prophets. The order of these warnings matters. Although the narrow path leads to life, not every voice speaking from the road is from the Father. Some of these voices may appear spiritual and seem harmless from the outside, but they hide a different desire. It is often at the very moment a person commits themselves to the narrow way that false prophets show up, dressed up to look like the shepherds whom we think we can trust.

Yeshua calls us to be careful, to stay alert, to pay attention.

In Hebraic thought, a prophet wasn't just someone who predicted the future. A prophet’s role was to call people back to faithfulness to God. The Hebrew word is navi (נָבִיא), meaning someone who speaks God’s word. A true prophet did not draw attention to himself but turned people’s hearts back to God and obedience. This is why false prophets were so dangerous. They did not always deny God openly, but often used spiritual words to lead people away from Him, giving comfort without repentance and peace without surrender. Jeremiah faced this when false prophets said, "Peace, peace," when there was no peace, and healed God’s people only on the surface because they would not tell the hard truth.

Yeshua describes how they will appear harmless, dressed in sheep's clothing. A wolf does not dress like a wolf when it wants access to the flock; it comes hidden under something familiar and welcome. The danger is rarely obvious, because if it were, the false prophet would never gain entrance in the first place.

In Greek, ravenous is harpax (ἅρπαξ), meaning greedy, seizing, snatching for itself. In Hebrew thought, this echoes the ze'ev (זְאֵב), the wolf, an image used throughout the Tanakh (Old Testament) for those who devour rather than shepherd. Outward clothing may convince, but inward hunger cannot stay hidden forever; fruit eventually tells the truth, and Yeshua says exactly that in the verses that follow: you will know them by their fruits.

This warning is not meant to make us fearful; it is meant to make us faithful. But we must also realize that discernment is not the same as a critical spirit. A critical spirit looks for faults so it can feel superior, because it is rooted in pride. However, discernment looks for fruit so it can remain faithful, because it is rooted in love for the truth, the flock, and the Shepherd. Proverbs continually warns about the strange voice, the flattering tongue, and the path which seems right but ends in death. Wisdom does not believe a voice simply because it sounds religious.

The voice of a true shepherd will always guide you closer to the King; it can comfort you, but it will not flatter your rebellion. It might encourage you, but it will not justify your sin. It will not replace the narrow path with a simpler one and still claim that this is obedience. False voices often promise what the flesh desires, making surrender seem unnecessary and holiness seem extreme.

This is where ashrei (אַשְׁרֵי) is found. Blessed is the one who knows the Shepherd's voice and refuses the wolf's, who loves deeply without becoming gullible, and tests every word against the truth rather than the costume it wears. That discernment is not fear; it is faithfulness, and those who walk in it are guarded, guided, and kept.

Friend, the Shepherd has not left you defenseless on the narrow way. He has given you His Word, His Spirit, and His voice so you can recognize truth and walk with confidence. You do not have to be anxious over every voice that speaks; you need to stay close enough to Yeshua to know what carries His heart. Let His Word sharpen your discernment, His Spirit steady your steps, and His truth guard your soul.
